On Friday April 6th at 0140 hours, the Seaford Fire Department was alerted for a house fire at 3951 South Street.

Chief of Department Stephen Feil was first to arrive and transmitted the working fire to incoming units. Engine 682 led by Lt. Keith Kern, were met with heavy fire on the number one side of the home. Due to the fact that this house was loaded with debris (collier's mansion), a defensive attack was initiated. Two 1 3/4 handlines were deployed and used to knock down all visible fire from the outside of the home.

Ladder 683's crew led by Lt. Tom Cottone laddered the building and provided horizontal ventilation throughout. Ex-Chief Carl Meyer and FF David Kohler were sent to the roof to perform vertical ventilation due to fire extension into the second floor and attic area. Visible fire could be seen running up the number 2 wall via the chimney flashing.

With the main body of fire extinguished on the first floor, units entered the building to extinguish fire on the second floor and attic area.

Numerous hazards presented themselves to firefighters, including a large hole in a first floor bathroom, guns, ammunition and vehicle parts in various rooms of the home.

Mutual aid was provided by the Wantagh Fire Dept. (Ladder 6911) and North Massapequa Fire Department (Ladder 661). All units were released from the scene at 0500 hrs.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire
Marshal's Office.

At 2334 hours on February 7, 2007, the Seaford Fire Department was alerted to a report of a house fire at 3951 Taft Ave.

Upon arrival of Chief of Department Stephen Feil, a heavy smoke condition was visible on the first floor of a 2 story expanded ranch. The homeowner reported being woken by their smoke detectors and noticed a fire in and around his fireplace as the family exited the home.

Chief Feil had Engine 682 pick up a hydrant and stretch an 1 3/4” handline to the front door.  Ladder 683’s crew entered the residence in an attempt to locate the fire.  With poor visibility, the interior truck was able to locate fire in the wall behind the fireplace with extension into the basement ceiling below. Fire was also visible from the attached garage side of the fireplace.  Extensive truck work ensued in and around the fireplace as well as in the basement and garage.  After all visible fire was knocked down; it became apparent that the fire had been burning for some time. Three 2”x6” floor joists in the basement ceiling had burned nearly completely through.

On a bitterly cold night, Chief Feil commends his members on a job well done.  All fire operations were completed by 0130 hours.

On Friday December 30, 2006, the Seaford Fire Department was alerted to a report of a house fire at 3968 Jerusalem Avenue.

2nd Assistant Chief Pat McIntyre was first on scene and transmitted a working fire. The fire was located on the number 1 floor of a split-level home with heavy smoke throughout.  A primary search of the upper floors proved negative.  Engine 682 stretched a line directly into the fire room from an exterior door on the exposure one side. All visible fire was quickly knocked down as Ladder 683’s crew overhauled and checked for extension.

Massapequa Ladder 632 was assigned as the FAST team and arrived quickly and was put to work by 1st Assistant Chief Paul Lochner who was the incident commander.  Wantagh Ladder 6911 was then called in to assume the FAST responsibilities.

A dog and a number of birds were rescued during the fire which appeared to have started in and around a Christmas tree.

On 12/18/06, the Seaford Fire Department was alerted to a house fire at 3890 Maple St.

Dispatch advised responding units that multiple calls were being received for a possible basement fire in the home of a Seaford firefighter’s mother. Upon arrival, Assistant Chief Pat McIntyre and Chief of Department Stephen Feil were able to determine all residents were out of the home, and that there was a confirmed fire in the basement.

Upon arrival, Engine 682 stretched a line to the exposure 2-side door, while   Ladder 683’s crew forced this door open.  Additional members from Ladder 683 checked for fire extension on the floors above due to the fact that the home was balloon construction.  Interior crews advanced into the basement and were able to extinguish all visible fire in short order.

No fire extension was discovered and the origin of the fire appeared to be in and around the oil-burner.  Massapequa Ladder 632 originally assigned as the FAST Team was put to work to assist with overhaul, and Wantagh Ladder 6911 was special called to assume FAST responsibilities.
