Open House A Success
On Wednesday, October 3rd, the volunteer members of the Seaford Fire Department held their annual Fire Prevention Open House. Community members were able to see what their firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) due on a daily basis for the town of Seaford.
EMT's, AMT's and paramedics showed the attendees their state of the art equipment and training tools. Community members had a chance to have their blood pressures checked by our medical professionals.
This year the SFD was able to borrow a fire extinguisher training unit from another fire department. 1st Assistant Chief McIntyre demonstrated how to use a fire extinguisher by remembering the acronym PASS: (Pull-Aim-Squeeze and Sweep). Community members had a chance to practice using the extinguishers bu putting out an actual fire. As always, the EDITH (Exit Drills in The Home) trailer was a huge hit. Children were taught what to do and how to escape their homes in the event of fire.
The need to 'stay low and go' and to have an escape plan and meeting place was stressed. Over 30 smoke detectors were given away during the open house.
Firefighters used the "Jaws of Life" to extricate a 'victim' from a car. But the highlight of the evening was the live burn of a room to show how quickly a fire can spread. Special thanks to Lt. Tyzner and his 'crew' for building another great burn room this year.
