SFD Receives Some Unusual Mutual Aid at House Fire
On Saturday September 17th, the members of the Seaford Fire Department were preparing for two parades. The Seaford High School Homecoming parade and the annual 6th Battalion Parade. Because of these parades, the SFD had set-up 'stand-by' units to cover the District while we were at the two parades. Hicksville Engine 932 arrived at our firehouse at 1430 hrs. to begin their standby duties.
At 1512 hrs. the dispatcher notified 6802 that he had received a call for a basement fire at 3787 Mansfield Dr. 2nd Assistant Chief Lochner asked the dispatcher to have Engine 932 respond and to alert the SFD to respond also, as we were still in service. 6802 arrived on scene 2 minutes later and advised he had 'smoke showing ' from a 2 story private dwelling. 6800, Chief of Department Bob Podesta arrived a minute later and transmitted a Signal 10—working fire.
The crew from 932 arrived and stretched a 2" attack line. They were met by fire just inside the front door. The fire originated in the basement and spread to the 1st floor via the open basement door. Seaford units arrived a minute later including SFD Ladder 683, who began a primary search as well as ventilation activities. Sea Cliff Ladder 574 (also a stand by unit) arrived on scene and set up their aerial ladder. North Massapequa responded as the FAST truck. Multiple lines were stretched from 932. The fire was declared under control at 1540 hrs.
The two occupants from the home were transported to the hospital by SFD ambulance 685. One occupant had burns to the head and the 2nd was complaining of difficulty breathing. The Nassau County Fire Marshal determined the cause to be a shorted electrical cord in the basement.
All units were secured at 1700 hrs.
