LPG Barbecue Safety Tips
With the warm weather approaching outdoor grilling becomes a common activity. Be sure to follow a few safety tips to keep it enjoyable and incident free.
- Before the grilling season begins be sure to clean your grill thoroughly. Built up grease can ignite and cause a fire.
- Check all connections for leaks. Check hoses for wear. Leaks are commonly a result of old cracked hoses, loose or cross threaded connections and insect nests in piping. (A solution of dish soap and water is useful for leak detection).
- Dont refill old rusty or damaged tanks.
- Be sure the grease cup is in place before grilling. In the absence of a grease cup hot grease can drip on to the supply hose eventually burning through and igniting.
- Keep grills at least 10 feet away from structures and combustibles.
- Be sure to open lid before ignition.
- Dont use a grill on a wooden deck, terrace or roof deck.
- Have an extinguisher nearby.
- Be sure to close all valves (including the valve on the top of the tank) when grilling is complete.
- Never store LPG cylinders indoors.
- Dont transport or store LPG cylinders in the trunk of your automobile.
What to do if a fire occurs.
- Grease fire-close the lid-turn off gas supply and call the FD. Dont try to extinguish a grease fire with water. Use an extinguisher that is rated for this purpose.
- Fire involving burning LPG-close valve if you can do so without risking personal injury. Call the FD immediately.
Call the Seaford Fire Department if:
- Any LPG leaks are detected.
- Any fire occurs.
- If you have any non-emergency questions regarding your grill call the firehouse at 785-7153.
